Improving Your Skills

by Best Magic Secrets Revealed on March 17, 2010

A magician is an artist.  And just like other artists the art of magic takes patience and time to be masterful.  An Olympic athlete doesn’t become phenomenal overnight.

The same is true for magic.  Every trick, every illusion is a piece of art that requires a commitment to excellence to master.  Here are a few tips for improving your skills and keeping your skills up to speed.

Practice makes perfect!  You’ve heard it before and it’s so true.  You can’t become great without practice.  If you ask any Olympic athlete their secret, they will all say that they practiced relentlessly.

A magician always should practice his/her bag of tricks.  No matter how much you feel you have mastered them.  Bungling up a magic trick in front of an audience is one of the most embarrassing experiences!  Save yourself from this grief and practice your repertoire, even if you think there are certain tricks you won’t be using for a while. You never know when you will have the last minute opportunity to do certain tricks, so why not keep yourself prepared?  Practicing 1-2 hours per day is not time wasted, it is time well spent.

Videotape yourself!  Some people have a difficult time watching themselves.  They are afraid to see something that maybe they are not as good as they thought.  We are our own worst critics, after all.  However, if you can put this aside and just watch yourself objectively, you can learn a lot about you by videotaping.  This can help you see how effective your tricks are.

Get Support!  No matter how good you are, there are always better magicians than you.  Reaching out for their help when you need it will only help you!  This is why all Olympic athletes have a coach.  They know they need help.  We can’t see ourselves from the outside.  Coaches can point out areas to improve as well as areas you are great at to embellish on.  Joining a group or association for magicians is a great way to get and give support.  Don’t be too bull headed to get it!!

Finally, utilize your free time!  Whenever you have some free time see it as an opportunity to learn a new trick, or practice your existing ones.  Most magicians love this art and it’s fun to practice.
