Get Yourself Heard

by Best Magic Secrets Revealed on January 30, 2010

So you are a performing magician and you now have some gigs coming up!  Remember to be prepared for every show!  MAKE NO ASSUMPTIONS about what will get handled for you by the person who hired you.

It is better to over-pack than to under-pack for yourself!  No one knows your show like you, and therefore you will always need to be proactive about all the supplies you will need.  This especially holds true for handling the sound in your show.

Two assumptions that inexperienced magicians make are: 1) “My voice is really loud and I don’t need a microphone to do my show”.  And 2) “I am sure that the venue provides everything I will need as far as sound goes for my show”.  And I say inexperienced magicians because those of you who have done this a few times know what I mean.  It only has to happen once or twice before you see that sound is something you have to take charge of for your own show.

Even if you have the most spectacular, mind-blowing, beautifully executed show, if your audience can’t hear you, you may as well be performing to the wall!!  Supplying your own sound system will save you the stress and embarrassment of being unprepared.  So just know that you will need your own microphone.  Even if you think the venue is small enough to get heard, or maybe you have been there and don’t think a microphone is necessary, get one and bring it!  The acoustics in a room change once it’s full of people.  It is better to have it and not need it!

Make sure to purchase a lapel mic, as it clips onto your jacket and is wireless.  You need to keep your hands free-duh!, so any hand held will not do.  Sometimes venues will supply a microphone, and you get there and it’s a hand held, and you are in trouble!  So get your own lapel mic, it will be one of the best investments you make for your business.

You will also need to supply a sound system (speakers, amp) to play through.  It doesn’t have to be anything big and fancy, just make sure it looks nice, professional, and that the sound is clear. Adding music to your show is a bonus.  The audience will enjoy it and it will enhance your tricks.  Just remember to assume nothing and bring everything!
