Magicians have a variety of different venues to perform at that pay a variety of different fees anywhere from a little extra income to a pretty substantial living. The sky is the limit. You decide how far you want to take it as a magician and just know that the opportunity is out there.
Many people get into the mindset that “well, there are so many magicians, and only so many places to perform”. This is simply not true, and if you are telling yourself this, you may want to get some coaching on how to retrain your brain to support you with winning thoughts vs. hindering ones.
Nevertheless, this article is to educate you on some of the opportunities out there and what you can expect for yourself financially.
The highest on the list would be TV specials or Las Vegas/Branson floor shows. These big name performers make an obscene (and well deserved) amount of money. Many of us have a long way to go before we are the next David Copperfield or Criss Angel, but again, the sky is the limit. If you are good and this is what you want for yourself, go for it!! Get the training, support, exposure, and experience you need.
Another well-rewarded venue is to perform at theme parks, such as Disneyworld. You can actually get one of these gigs with a small show. And you can make a living doing this. There are other specialty venues like The Magic Castle, Macropolis in Santa Monica, and many others. Begin doing some research and find out when they hold auditions, etc.
At about the same pay as the above, and something you may not have to relocate for is to tap into the corporate world. Corporations love using magicians at trade shows, conventions, and special events to market and promote their products. And the pay is very good. You can expect to make between $1,000-$3,000 a day having fun and needing only a few props.
Then there is the world of the local magician. Family parties, birthdays, weddings, and bar mitzvahs are usually dependable markets for the local entertainer. You can make between $75 and $400 doing these events, and they usually lead to referrals.
Restaurant magician is something to consider. You can make around $100 for a few hours of work. This is becoming more and more popular and many magicians use this as a way to market their corporate or local shows.
Finally, there is a huge market for children’s shows. They require travel, lots of packing, and some patience, but some magicians make a living entirely off of children’s shows. You must be willing to work weekends, but can make anywhere from $100 to $500 in some upscale areas. And you can get multiple referrals from doing these events.
