By now maybe you have a pretty good repertoire of tricks. You are feeling pretty confident about what you can do and you are ready to make some money at it. Magic can be very fruitful and it doesn’t take a David Copperfield to turn it into a profession. Whether you want to make this your full time gig, or just something to supplement your existing income, there is no reason that you cannot make money doing something you love-MAGIC!
The first step is to begin marketing yourself. Face it, clients won’t just come knocking on your door, so just like in any business you’ve got to get your name out there. The first thing you need to do is set up a professional website for yourself. There are billions of websites out there, and you don’t want to get lost in the mix. You can higher someone rather inexpensively to set up your site so that you get seen more easily. I can’t stress enough the importance of a good and effective website in this age of the Internet.
Next, create a sign that you can post in your front yard or window of your house or apartment. Have it say something like “Children’s Entertainer”, or “Corporate Entertainer”. It doesn’t need to have your name, just what you do and a contact number or website address. This can be created on your own computer. It can be effective, especially if you live in a high traffic area, or in a big family neighborhood.
Create an effective flyer. Make sure to make what you do stand out and not necessarily your name. You can post these at various stores, gyms, library, schools, and malls.
Finally, as you do start to perform in shows, the best way to market yourself is to see each of the audience members as a potential client. Your focus should be on making it enjoyable for everyone! The best marketing is word of mouth, and if you play it smart you will get many referrals. It’s also a good idea to have some “take-aways” at your show that has your contact information on it. This is especially effective at kid’s shows. Send home a coloring page, or a magic dollar bill, etc. with your name and number and website on it. Also after shows, visit with the parents or clients. Bring out your personality and they will remember you!
