They say that the biggest fear that human beings have is public speaking. I am not so sure if it’s the speaking part or just the fear of being the center of attention. Sure, there is a small percentage of the population that is comfortable in the spot light. They love the attention and are natural performers. They seek out opportunities to be seen and are actually more comfortable in large groups than they are one on one.
Performing magic brings up this same fear for most magicians. Not only are all eyes on me when performing but add to that the stress of having to execute a trick that can be extremely complicated while diverting the audiences’ attention away from what is happening. As well as looking good, sounding good, and appearing like I have it all together. What a challenge!!!
With a few pointers you can learn to conquer this fear, and be great despite the fear. Keep in mind that fear is not bad! In fact it simply means that you are alive, and that you are willing to venture outside of your comfort zone. So if you are fearful, GREAT!! It means you are growing.

As you are performing make eye contact with your audience. This will draw them it, and also pull you out! It will help you connect and settle down inside. And also, talk with your audience. Ask them questions. Learn a few jokes and some patter. Again, this will help you connect and ease some of your nervousness
The most important pointer is to keep putting yourself in situations where you get to perform your magic. Everything is scary the first few times you do it. The more and more you do it, the more your confidence grows and the “pit” in your stomach will begin to subside. No one wakes up one day and says, “hey, I feel so confident, I think I’ll go perform for 10,000 people”. The confidence only comes from doing what scares you!!
