Inventing Magic

by Best Magic Secrets Revealed on November 11, 2009

Magicians are highly creative individuals.  At times it’s hard for magicians to keep that “edge” in their performance if they are executing the same tricks over and over and over again.  They are so creative that they tend to get bored easily.

It’s imperative that magicians are always challenging themselves with their knowledge and performance of magic.  Getting out of your comfort zones and trying something new will keep your passion and performance alive.  One of the greatest ways to do this is experiment with inventing your own magic tricks.  Here are a few steps to help you along the way:

Firstly, brainstorm about tricks.  When you do this, just let your mind wander as far as it can go.  Don’t limit your thinking to what you think is possible, think of the impossible.  What would you want the over-all effect to be?  For example, do you want to remove your head off of your body and set it on a table, while still talking to the audience?  This is the kind of “out of the box” thinking you need to do in this stage.  Go for the most unbelievable effect.

Then research your idea.  Even some of the most imaginative tricks may have been done before.  Make sure yours hasn’t by researching every avenue.  Don’t let this discourage you if you find it’s been done before.  Look at ways to tweak your ideas so that it becomes yours.

Next, write down any and all techniques that will be needed in your trick. Consider sleights, props, manufacturing issues, safety issues, and angles.  This is where the hard work begins. Decide what you will need and when.

Begin rehearsing your trick on anyone that will watch.  Perfect it and also make sure that it is something that is duplicatable.  You don’t want to create something amazing and not be able to pass it on.
